AI Customer Segmentation Case Study

Deep Understanding of Market and Customer Profiles:

We deepened our market insight from events like the Arab Health conference and others in healthcare sector. We’ve mapped out distinct customer profiles — from health tech to traditional providers and manufacturers — noting their unique challenges. Recognizing each profile’s specific needs has been key to customizing our services, ensuring they align with their individual goals.

Note: Our strategy is grounded in market insights and on the data set with free text features. However, companies with rich, well-defined data lacking customer classifications could benefit from a data-centric approach. Using clustering and rule engines, they can detect patterns for accurate segmentation and craft highly personalized services. We would recommend to combine both approaches, if specifics of your company and data set permit it.

Validation of Classification Effectiveness Through Business Metrics:

To test our customer classification and offerings, we initially labeled 10% of our dataset. This subset was then narrowed down to include only records with available emails for our marketing efforts. We conducted a targeted email campaign directed at healthtech firms, achieving a notable 63.6% open rate—a figure well above the usual 15-25% benchmark for success. This outcome not only validates our approach but also highlights the potential within the portion of our data that we have effectively classified and contacted.

The results are presented in the screenshot below.

Streamlining Strategic Automation for Efficient Customization:

Our customized services have exceeded expectations, revealing the viability of our tailored approach. However, manually applying this strategy to a vast number of customers would be prohibitively time-consuming, given the complexity of our dataset and the need for nuanced segmentation. Our objective is to automate the identification and matching of services to customers, aiming to enhance email marketing effectiveness, thereby significantly reducing the manual effort required for detailed segmentation.

Selecting the ML Model for Efficiency:

Our dataset, rich in text and 10 significant features influencing labeling, led us to choose the XGB model. This choice avoids the complexity of manually crafting detailed rules, a task that can be challenging for any business stakeholder. The XGB model adeptly navigates through the data, identifying patterns and emulating human reasoning found in the training dataset, thereby automating and simplifying the analysis.

Model Development and Training:

  1. In the model development and training phase, we concentrated on harnessing the strengths of the XGBoost algorithm. Our process began with meticulous feature engineering, ensuring our dataset was primed to inform our predictive model effectively. After refining our features, we moved to split the data, which provided a robust basis for both training and evaluating the model’s capabilities.

The XGBoost model was meticulously trained and validated using this curated data, ensuring that it could accurately segment customers. Development took place in Jupyter notebooks, which allowed for an iterative approach to fine-tuning our model’s parameters. Once optimized, the model was encapsulated within a pipeline, facilitating seamless deployment and scalability for classifying customers into well-defined segments.

Note: Cross-validation is standard for handling large datasets and is particularly useful when data scientists lack direct access to business insights from stakeholders, allowing verification using the training dataset without needing business involvement during the development phase. For our project, targeting a specific customer segment with a small email dataset, the business team’s manual review was crucial to validate the model’s accuracy. Therefore, combining cross-validation for data scientists’ statistical analysis with the business team’s practical assessment is advisable for comprehensive validation.

KPI Verification and Strategic Goal Realization:

Our approach involved dispatching tailored offerings to a broader dataset, which was an expansion from the initial manual customer segmentation outlined in Step 2. This method leveraged AI-driven customer segmentation and personalized service offerings, resulting in a remarkable 63.5% email open rate, demonstrating the effectiveness of our strategy.

Note: In our AI labeled dataset, there were only 104 companies that had provided email addresses.

In conclusion, the strategic application of AI-driven customer segmentation and the thoughtful integration of personalized service offerings have significantly enhanced the effectiveness of our marketing campaigns. Our journey from initial data classification to the realization of strategic goals illustrates the transformative power of data-driven strategies in achieving exceptional marketing outcomes and reducing manual work. It reinforces the potential of AI and machine learning in crafting highly targeted, efficient, and effective marketing strategies that resonate deeply with distinct customer segments.
